The main tasks of the RC-135V and RC-135W are to identify sources of radio signals in the area of potential combat operations, collect information on land, sea and air targets, intercept radio communication between command posts and combat units, and monitor enemy air defences. Depending on deployment the aircraft crew can include 12 to 16 surveillance operators and analysts for the purpose of operational data collection. Usually the RC-135V and RC-135W perform airborne command tasks together with other reconnaissance aircraft such as the E-3 AWACS, transmitting the gathered intelligence through a special encrypted communication channel. The RC-135V and RC-135W have been in service with the US Air Force for over 40 years and are the main type used for these operations. It first flew in 1947 and served with the U.S. Air Force from 1950 to 1957. At the time, it was the largest land-based transport aircraft in the world, capable of carrying up to 400 fully equipped troops or 45 tons of cargo. The XC-99 set several aviation records during its operational life and was used extensively by the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. A civilian passenger variant was proposed but ultimately cancelled, and no further production orders were placed. As a result, only a single prototype was built, which survives at Davis-Monthan AFB, albeit in a dismantled state. The XC-99 remained the largest transport aircraft of its kind until the introduction of the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy in the late 1960s... Developed during the inter-war period, the Horch 830R is considered the first example of the ‘Kubelwagen’ type vehicle widely used by the German Army during the Second World War. The design was based on a simplified Horch luxury car chassis, significantly strengthened according to military requirements. Later variants were used as radio vehicles with box-shaped bodies. (The Horch company was merged into the Auto-Union conglomerate, which also included Audi). From 1934 to 1937 almost 4,500 units of this type were produced and widely used from the first days of World War II up to and including 1943, when the vast majority were lost in the roadless conditions of the Eastern Front. Production lasted from 1938 to 1941, during which time more than 8,000 were produced. With the outbreak of World War Two, many Ford V8 G81As were requisitioned from private owners and transferred to German military units. Cars of this type were extensively used during the Blitzkrieg when the countries of Europe had a wide network of good quality roads. But after the beginning of the Eastern campaign, the use of these vehicles turned out to be impractical due to the road surfaces deteriorating to a terrible state in the autumn and spring, or the limited availability of any roads at all. In Germany the G81A Cabriolet was used mainly as a police car until 1944. A number of different versions of the G81A were developed including the convertible with an open top. These cars were mainly used in combat units as personal transports for middle-ranking officers. 9 sprues. Designed by the Sopwith Aviation Company, Kingston-on-Thames, and known initially as the Sopwith LCT (Land Clerget Tractor), it was renamed "1½ Strutter" after the cabane struts as the distinctive W form was reminiscent of half-struts. The 1½ Strutter's first flight was in mid-December 1915, with No 5 Wing RNAS (Royal Naval Air Service) taking delivery of the type first in April 1916. 1½ Strutters were also ordered by the RFC (Royal Flying Corps). To meet demand for the two-seat (Type 9400 fighter) and single-seat (Type 9700 bomber) versions, the 1½ Strutter was also built under licence by Morgan & Co, Hooper, Westland, Vickers, Mann & Egerton, and Ruston & Proctor. Sopwith's and the subcontractors completed 1282 1½ Strutters of all types. At the same time France urgently needed a new fighter-bomber and purchased a limited number of 1½ Strutters from Sopwith. The aircraft proved to be one of the most successful of its type and more than 600 were built. Its military service lasted more than 60 years, during which time several engine and avionics upgrades took place. The KC-135R variant with the CFM F108 engine appeared in the late 1990s and turned out to be one of the last in the huge KC-135 family. Aircraft of this type took an active part in all military conflicts from the Vietnam War onwards. KC-135s delivered fuel air-to-air to almost every type of US Air Force aircraft, and their contribution to the overall military cause cannot be fully estimated.
