Handley Page Night Bombers 0/100, 0/400 & V/1500 Author: W.A. Harrison

By William Harrison

The Handley Page 0/100, 0/400 and V/1500 were the first true heavy bombers of the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Air Force during the First World War, giving Britain the long-range striking power needed for strategic bombing deep into Germany. Designed initially with a 114ft wingspan (later 100ft), folding wings, armour protection and twin engines, the early 0/100s were underpowered and slow. Performance improved dramatically with the arrival of Rolls Royce Eagle engines. Bomb capacity also grew from six 100lb bombs to loads of sixteen 112lb, and eventually to 230lb, 250lb, 550lb, 1,600lb and even 3,360lb weapons. After successful trials, the 0/100 entered service and was refined into the 0/400, which crews regarded highly. These aircraft enabled the RFC/RAF to take the air war to the enemy, but demands for even greater range led to the creation of the enormous V/1500, capable of reaching Berlin. The war ended before such a raid could be flown, and the type saw little operational use.

After the Armistice, surplus 0/400s were converted into civil transports, becoming the O/7, O/10 and O/11 variants. They were used in early commercial aviation and exported to countries including Argentina, Australia, China, India and South Africa. One 0/400 even carried T. E. Lawrence during his return from the Versailles Conference, though the aircraft later crashed without injuring him. By 1922 most Handley Page bombers and their civilian derivatives had disappeared, but they had already laid the foundations of long range military and civil aviation.

Warpaint 153 follows the usual format telling the full history of the development and service, and includes a walkaround compiled from original images of aircraft in service, and colour profiles and plans by Sam Pearson.. Price:£17.00

Hawker-Siddeley 748 & Andover in Military Service. Author Adrian Balch	56 pages

Making its first flight on 24 June 1960 the prototype AVRO 748, G-APZV, became a very successful rugged replacement for the many DC-3 Dakotas flying around the world. In production, it became the second most successful British turboprop transport aircraft and was only superseded in numbers produced by those of the Vickers Viscount.

A total of 381 Hawker Siddeley HS 748 aircraft were built, including eighty-nine manufactured under license by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in India, with production running from 1960 to 1988 for this successful turboprop airliner and its military variant, the Andover. The total included, thirty-seven Andovers for the RAF and RNZAF.

Over fifty military HS 748s were sold, seventy-two for the Indian Air Force, plus others for RAAF, Brazilian Air Force and others, making a substantial portion of the 381 total built, with many going to various air forces worldwide for roles like transport, navigation training and VIP transports. The HS748 was selected for the Royal Family as the Andover CC.2 and three of them served The Queen’s Flight faithfully and reliably for over twenty years from 1964

There are other publications that focus on all the civil airlines that have operated the HS748, but as a Warpaint publication, this is the first time all those that saw military service with air forces around the world have been featured – and nearly all in over 160 top quality colour photographs with notes on colour schemes and markings. This is another quality Warpaint by author Adrian Balch, supported by accurate profile drawings by artist Sam Pearson and a must-have addition for aviation historians and modellers alike..
Republic F-84F Thunderstreak part 2 - Armée de l?Air / Belgian Air Force.

The decal sheet contains the following markings:

F-84F Thunderstreak - Armée de l´Air, EC 2/4 Lafayette, 1959.
F-84F Thunderstreak - Armée de l´Air, EC 1/1 Corse, 1956.
F-84F Thunderstreak - Belgian Air Force, 2.Wing Florennes Demo Flight.
F-84F Thunderstreak - Armée de l'Air, EC 2/4 Lafayette, 1959: This machine belonged to Escadron de Chasse 2/4 "La Fayette" (Fighter Squadron 2/4 Lafayette) of the French Air Force (Armée de l'Air). This squadron is historically significant and bears the name of the famous Lafayette Escadrille of World War I, composed of American volunteers. In 1959, the squadron operated F-84F Thunderstreak aircraft, which formed the backbone of the French fighter-bomber force at the time. EC 2/4 Lafayette was part of the 4e Escadre de Chasse (4th Fighter Wing).

F-84F Thunderstreak - Armée de l'Air, EC 1/1 Corse, 1956: this Thunderstreak served with the Escadron de Chasse 1/1 Corse (Fighter Squadron 1/1 Corsica) of the French Air Force. This squadron was part of the 1re Escadre de Chasse (1st Fighter Wing). In 1956, when this machine operated, the French Air Force was undergoing rearmament to more modern jet aircraft and the F-84F represented a significant strike force. The EC 1/1 Corse had a rich history dating back to the First World War.

F-84F Thunderstreak - Belgian Air Force, 2nd Wing Florennes Demo Flight: This F-84F Thunderstreak belonged to the 2nd Wing of the Belgian Air Force, operating out of Florennes. It served in the Demo Flight of this wing. Demonstration squadrons were tasked with demonstrating the capabilities of aircraft and pilots at air shows and public performances. The Belgian Air Force used the F-84F Thunderstreak from 1955 to 1972, and the 2nd Wing was one of the main units operating these aircraft. The squadron's demonstration aircraft often carried special attractive livery.
The F-84F Thunderstreak was an American arrow-wing jet fighter bomber developed by Republic Aviation. Its development followed the earlier F-84 Thunderjet straight-wing type, but the "F" version represented an almost entirely new aircraft. The prototype F-84F first flew in June 1950.

Series production began in 1954, and the aircraft served primarily with the U.S. Air Force's Tactical Air Command as a fighter-bomber for ground attack. A total of 2,711 F-84Fs were produced, more than half of which were delivered to NATO member nations under the Mutual Defense Assistance Program (MDAP).

The F-84F Thunderstreak featured an arrow wing, which allowed it to reach higher speeds than its straight-wing predecessor. It was powered by a Wright J65 jet engine. The aircraft carried an armament of six 12.7 mm machine guns and could carry up to 2,700 kg of external cargo, including bombs and rockets, and even a tactical nuclear weapon.

Although the F-84F was more advanced than the original Thunderjet, its service with the U.S. Air Force's front line was relatively short, as jet technology advanced rapidly and it was soon replaced by more modern machines such as the F-100 Super Sabre. However, the F-84F remained in service with the Air National Guard until the 1970s, and served even longer in many allied countries, such as Turkey until 1982.

The F-84F Thunderstreak saw combat deployment in the French Air Force during the Suez Crisis and the Greek-Turkish conflict over Cyprus, for example. Some modified machines were also used for special purposes, for example in the FICON project.

Republic F-84F Thunderstreak part 1 - Belgian Air Force.

The decal sheet contains the following markings:

F-84F Thunderstreak - Belgian Air Force, Operational Conversion Unit, 1970.
F-84F Thunderstreak - Belgian Air Force, 2nd Squadron, Florennes.
F-84F Thunderstreak - Belgian Air Force, 2.Wing Florennes Demo Flight.
The Belgian Air Force operated the F-84F Thunderstreak from 1955 to 1972. Belgium received a total of 197 of these fighter-bombers under the MDAP military assistance program. The aircraft served with several squadrons at various bases, with the 2nd Squadron and the 2nd Wing at Florennes playing a significant role.

F-84F Thunderstreak - Belgian Air Force, Operational Conversion Unit, 1970: In 1970, as the F-84F was nearing the end of its service life in the Belgian Air Force (replaced by the more modern Mirage 5), the Operational Conversion Unit was used to retrain pilots to other aircraft types. The use of the Thunderstreak in this unit in 1970 marked the final phase of its service, when it was used to train pilots who would no longer fly it actively.
F-84F Thunderstreak - Belgian Air Force, 2nd Squadron, Florennes: The 2nd Squadron was one of the main units of the Belgian Air Force to operate the F-84F Thunderstreak from its introduction in 1955 until its retirement in 1972, when it was re-equipped with Mirage 5 aircraft. The 2nd Squadron, based at Florennes, was known for its emblem, the red comet. The squadron's aircraft bore a distinctive marking and took part in many exercises and performed the role of fighter-bomber.
The F-84F Thunderstreak - Belgian Air Force, 2nd Wing Florennes Demo Flight: the 2nd Wing at Florennes also operated an aerobatic group (Demo Flight) that performed flight demonstrations in F-84F Thunderstreak aircraft. These demonstrations were used to promote the Air Force and demonstrate the capabilities of the aircraft and pilots. The aircraft for these demonstrations often carried special, attractive camouflage and were flown by selected, experienced pilots.
The Belgian F-84F Thunderstreak played a significant role in the Air Force during the early Cold War. Many were scrapped after retirement, but some have survived as museum exhibits or memorials.

FIGURE NOT INCLUDED

The Boeing B-17 "Flying Fortress" is a four-engine heavy bomber that was extensively employed by the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. It was produced in large numbers and saw widespread use, particularly by the 8th Air Force, for daytime strategic bombing missions over the European front, often with the support of long-range fighter escorts. The “F” variant marked a significant advancement over earlier models. The Boeing B-17F featured extended operational range, the ability to carry a substantial offensive payload, and enhanced defensive armament consisting of ten .50 caliber machine guns. One of the most appreciated features among flight crews was the B-17’s remarkable ability to return to base despite sustaining heavy structural damage from enemy fire.. 40-pages, 126 b&w photos, 5-color photos, 18-drawings.

ISBN: 979-8-9899509-7-3

Grummans success with its famous JRF/G-21 “Goose” was so great that Grumman saw the need for a less costly, smaller version that targeted smaller companies, executives, celebrities and sportsmen. This became the G-44 “Widgeon”. It cost about $30,000, which was 1/2 the price of a “Goose”. Thirty were built for civilian customers by 7 December 1941 after which most of these were impressed into USAAC service or the Civil Air Patrol. Just prior to WWII, the Coast guard ordered 25 as J4F-1s which differed from the G-44 by having a upper fuselage stretcher hatch instead of a cabin door. During the war the USCG used these and 11 Navy J4F-2s on anti-submarine patrols. Also 12 were purchased by Portugal, 131 J4F-2s with cabin doors went to the Navy, 17 were Lend Leased to England as “Gosling” and one was acquired by Paraguay. Brazil also received 14 J4F-2s. Post-war “Widgeons” were operated by Thailand’s and Israel’s military too.. Price:£19.99

AGM-130 1/72 The AGM-130 is a powered air-to-surface missile designed for strikes at long range against various targets. It is essentially a rocket-boosted version of the GBU-15 bomb with the rocket motor increasing the launch range and so giving the launch aircraft protection from whatever defenses may protect the target. Two can be carried by the F-111 and McDonnell F-15E Eagle. The AGM-130 saw its first operational service on 11 January 1999 during Operation Northern Watch, when a pair of AGM-130s were used by F-15Es to destroy two Iraqi SAM sites. The AGM-130 was also the weapon used in the April 1999 NATO strike on a railway bridge in Grdelica, Serbia.. Price:£8.99

Aero L-39, L-59, L-139 & L-159 Albatros
By Jakub Fojtík Ph.D.

This latest Warpaint title covers the Aero L-39 Albatros, a a Czech-designed jet trainer and light attack aircraft developed by Aero Vodochody during the 1960s as a successor to the L-29 Delfín. It first flew in 1968 and entered service in 1972, becoming the standard jet trainer for Warsaw Pact nations. With over 2,900 units built, the L-39 became one of the most widely used jet trainers globally, praised for its reliability, ease of maintenance, and versatility. Building on this legacy, the L-159 ALCA (Advanced Light Combat Aircraft) was introduced in the late 1990s, developed to replace aging Soviet-era fighters in the Czech Air Force, first flying in 1997 and entering service in 2000.

Curtiss SB2C Helldiver Warpaint Special No.7 116 Pages

The Curtiss SB2C Helldiver was one of those aircraft that was either loved or hated- there was no middle ground. Forged in a hurry for the forthcoming war the Helldiver was designed in a hurry, built by mostly by under skilled personnel while being bombarded by the customer with their extra changes and demands. Even under this pressure Curtiss managed to produce a prototype that flew, even though it would soon reveal strength and build problems. This is what prototypes are for, however, the first production model, the Dash-1, was beset by many problems that saw one carrier captain demanding that the Helldivers be removed and the off loaded Douglas Dauntless dive bombers be reinstated. From the SB2C-3 onwards, after undergoing a full modification programme, a competent combat aircraft would emerge. Used throughout 1944/45 the Helldiver squadrons, now operating from the fast carriers, took the war to the Japanese all the way to Tokyo. Post 1945 the Helldiver would stay on active service until replaced by the Douglas AD-1 Skyraider. Overseas usage would see later build models being operated by France, Greece, Italy ,Portugal and Thailand. The Royal Navy also formed a single squadron that would never deploy on active service. Undergoing flight testing in Britain, Eric ‘Winkle’ Brown would declare that the Helldiver was the worst aircraft he had ever flown. Artwork and scale drawings by Sam Pearson..
Dassault Mystère & Super Mystère
By Andy Evans

40 plus 4 pages

The Dassault MD.452 Mystère was a straightforward development of the successful Dassault Ouragan with a 30-degree swept wing and modified tail surfaces. The aircraft saw extensive service with the French air force, evolving first into the Mystère IVA, and the Super Mystère, which was the first Western European supersonic aircraft to enter mass production. Both the Mystère IVA, and the Super Mystère saw extensive combat use with the Israeli Air Force, while other operators of Mystère deriviatives included India and Honduras.

While aimed at both the general aviation enthusiast and the scale modeller, this latest addition to the Warpaintrange follows on the heels of newly-tooled kits from Czech manufacturer Special Hobby, and is designed to help add both detail and context to a modelling project.

The book includes all the usual Warpaint features, with walkarounds of museum exhibits, and artwork and scale drawings by Sam Pearson.. Price:£15.00

US Army M4A1(76w) Sherman HVSS Medium Tank
The M4A1(76)W HVSS was a late-war variant of the U.S. Sherman medium tank, combining several key upgrades to improve firepower, survivability, and mobility.
• M4A1: Cast hull design, giving it a rounded appearance.
• 76mm gun: Replaced the earlier 75mm, offering better anti-tank performance.
• "W": Denotes wet stowage of ammunition, reducing fire risk from hits.
• HVSS (Horizontal Volute Spring Suspension): A wider-track suspension system that improved ride quality and allowed better weight distribution, increasing cross-country performance.
Entering service in late 1944, this variant saw action in Europe and continued to serve in various forms well into the post-war era with allied and NATO-aligned forces.. Price:£47.99
