H.M.S. Hood Mk.1 15"/42 Gun Turret B
Royal Navy Admiral Class Battlecruiser built and engined in Clydebank by Messrs John Brown & Co Ltd. Laid down in September 1916 and launched in August 1918, HOOD was the largest warship afloat when commissioned on May 15th 1920, retaining that distinction for the next twenty years.

HOOD was armed with eight 15in 42-calibre Mk.I guns in four twin turrets in superfiring position, designated A, B, X, and Y from bow to stern. Turret B was located on the fo'c's'le deck, The turrets were hydraulically powered and could elevate to 30° and depress to -5° . The rate of fire for each turret was 2 rounds per minute, for a total of 8 rounds per minute for the entire ship.

The gun turrets on HOOD were some of the most powerful and advanced in the world at the time of their construction. They were a major factor in the ship's reputation as one of the most formidable warships in the world. However, they were also a major weakness. The turrets were relatively slow to traverse, and vulnerable to plunging fire from enemy battleships. This vulnerability was ultimately exploited by the German battleship BISMARCK, which sank HOOD in the Battle of the Denmark Strait on May 24th 1941.
1 bow turret c.1941. Choice of 2 markings. L: 520mm. Base included.. Price:£43.33

Weser Aircraft Carrier
Proposed German Navy auxiliary aircraft carrier.

The loss of BISMARCK to British carrier-borne aircraft and surface salvos in May 1941 and aerial attacks on TIRPITZ in March 1942, emphasised to the German High Command the strategic importance of aircraft carriers.

Project WESER 1 was a planned carrier conversion of an unfinished Admiral Hipper Class heavy cruiser, SEYDLITZ, berthed at Bremen. But the reconstruction wasn't completed; works had begun in 1942, only to be abandoned the following summer. The partially-stripped vessel was towed to Königsberg (Kaliningrad) on the Baltic Sea in March/April 1944 and scuttled in early 1945, prior to the Red Army's arrival. Raised by the Russians in 1946, potentially as a source of parts for the partially constructed Admiral Hipper Class LÃœTZOW (which the Soviets had purchased in 1941 under the treaty of non-aggression between Germany and the USSR signed in 1939). Damage was extensive and in 1947 the ship was scrapped, the hull having never seen operational service. The kit represents 'what if' the carrier had materialised. [NF]..
H.M.S. Ark Royal 1939 Designed in 1934 to fit the restrictions of the Washington Naval Treaty, Ark Royal was built by Cammell Laird and Company, Ltd. at Birkenhead, England, and completed in November 1938. Her design differed from previous aircraft carriers. Ark Royal was the first ship on which the hangars and flight deck were an integral part of the hull, instead of an add-on or part of the superstructure. Designed to carry a large number of aircraft, she had two hangar deck levels. She served during a period that first saw the extensive use of naval air power; a number of carrier tactics were developed and refined aboard Ark Royal.
Ark Royal served in some of the most active naval theatres of the Second World War. She was involved in the first aerial and U-boat kills of the war, operations off Norway, the search for the German battleship Bismarck, and the Malta Convoys. Ark Royal survived several near misses and gained a reputation as a 'lucky ship'. The Germans incorrectly reported her as sunk on multiple occasions.
She was torpedoed on 13 November 1941 by the German submarine U-81 and sank the following day. Her sinking was the subject of several inquiries; investigators were keen to know how the carrier was lost, in spite of efforts to save the ship and tow her to the naval base at Gibraltar. They found that several design flaws contributed to the loss, which were rectified in new British carriers.. Price:£37.49
