The AT-6 Texan/Harvard was used mainly for training during World War II. However, North American already anticipated during its design that some operators would use the Texan as a combat aircraft. After World War II, it became clear that the Texan was excellent for counter-guerrilla warfare and also in the FAC (Forward Air Control) role. Squadrons of Texans, nicknamed ‘Mosquito’, were used by the USAF in the Korean War. European countries such as France, Spain, Britain and Portugal used armed Texans in colonial or anti-communist conflicts in Africa. Texans fought against the communists in Greece. Each panel measured 1 ft 7.5 in by 11 ft 9.75 in, and interlocked with its neighbour by a series of flat 'T' hooks and slots along each of the longest sides, which allowed a degree of flexibility of movement. PSP was used by Allied armies and air forces on all fronts during World War Two and continued in use through the Korean War and well into the Vietnam War. During the latter conflict however, PSP was found to be unsuitable to that environment due to vegetation growing through the lightening holes which could be ingested into aircraft intakes. PSP was gradually replaced with the improved M8A1 type which omitted the lightening holes.
