Naval Fighters - NFAF217 - No Scale | Curtiss XP-55 Ascender By Gerry Balzer, 72-pages, 148-b&w photos, 4-color photos. The Curtiss XP-55 Ascender was a tailless swept-wing WWII pusher fighter design born out by the USAAC 1940 fighter competition. The USAAC was looking for a fighter to counter the threat of the German Bf-109 and the Japanese Zero and replace the obsolete P-35s, P-36s and the front line P-40s just entering service. From this competition three unusual pusher prototypes were ordered, the Consolidated XP-54, Curtiss XP-55, and the Northrop XP-56. A low powered full scale flying model (model CW 24B)was built out of wood and cloth to substantiate the flying qualities, and was first flown on 2 December 1941. The XP-55 mock-up was completed in August 1942, and the first of three XP-55s was completed on 26 June 1943 with its first flight being conducted on 13 July 1943. The first aircraft was destroyed on 15 November 1943. Changes deemed necessary were incorporated in the second airframe in which performance testing began on 16 September 1944. Although the much more capable P-38, P-47, and P-51 had entered service, research into the XP-55s unusual design continued. The third XP-55 had entered flight testing in April 1944 and was used at Eglin Field for armament tests before being lost during a war bond rally display on 27 May 1945. By then the program had been terminated. Today, the second XP-55 presides in restored condition at the Kalamazoo Air Museum. More | Aircraft books | Catalogue | £20.80 | ||

Ventura - VA48108 - 1:48 | RNZAF Curtiss P-40s P-40M-5 NZ3072 "Wairarapa Wildcat" 1943. NZ3072 was delivered by ship to Auckland New Zealand and assembled at Hobsonville in March 1943. It suffered minor damage in New Caledonia on the ferry flight north to the Pacific war zone and was repaired by the local U.S.Army Air Service Command unit. Before handing the aircraft back to the New Zealanders, they painted their unit emblem of a black tomcat on the cowlings. NZ3072 was then allocated to Flying officer Geoff Fisken as his aircraft. It was decided to leave the cat marking on and, as many in the Squadron came from the Wairarapa province of New Zealand, a white 'Wairarapa Wildcat' name was added. Six Japanese flags denoting Fisken's victorys in the defence of Malaya were added and he accumulated a further five victories with No.14 Squadron during their first tour. P-40M NZ3078 in May/June 1943. Squadron Leader Michael J Herrick served in the RAF as a night fighter pilot during the Battle of Britain where he was credited with four victories, plus one damaged. He was posted to No.15 Squadron RNZAF flying P-40 Kittyhawks in February 1943. In April, the squadron moved to Guadalcanal. Herrick's first combat with the Japanese took place on 6 May when he and his wingman shared in the destruction of a float-plane. Herrick shot down an A6M Zero on 7 June when 12 No.15 Squadron P-40s, along with 88 other allied fighters, fought around 50 Japanese fighters. By November 1943 Herrick was commanding No.15 Squadron flying missions to protect the beachhead on Bougainville but on one of these missions, he was wounded in the foot and consequently returned home to New Zealand. By January 1944 Squadron Leader Herrick was back in Europe flying Mosquito night fighters with No.305 (Polish) Squadron. He was shot down and killed on 16 June 1944. Warpaint Series - WPS84 - No Scale | Grumman F6F Hellcat. Even before Pearl Harbor the U.S. Navy realised that it would be hard for its existing fighters, the F2A Buffalo and F4F Wildcat, to deal with Japan's shipboard fighters, especially the A6M Zero. The situation was such that in June 1941 the U.S. Navy placed orders with Grumman 's 'Iron Works' for the F6F Hellcat before the first prototype had even flown. It was the right decision for Grumman 's new fighter, although much larger and heavier than the Zero, proved to be the latter's nemesis, so that the American fighter's better fire-power, sturdiness, range and speed more than matched the Zero's agility. Its entry into service was also timely, for the much- awaited F4U Corsair suffered from a flawed carrier deck capability, so that the Hellcat remained the main carrier fighter of the U.S. Navy throughout the rest of the Second World War and established air superiority in the Pacific. Indeed, in barely two years of war it destroyed no less than 5,271 enemy aircraft of the 6,477 claimed by the U.S. fighters, attaining a fantastic kill-to-loss ratio of 19.1:1, and fully deserving the nickname of 'Ace-Maker'. It certainly was the most important Allied shipboard fighter of that world conflict. The Hellcat was used also by the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm, during the war, while in the postwar period it saw service with the French Aeronavale, which used them in Indochina, as well as with the Uruguayan Navy, the latter flying them until 1961.
