The Boeing B-17 "Flying Fortress" is a four-engine heavy bomber that was extensively employed by the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. It was produced in large numbers and saw widespread use, particularly by the 8th Air Force, for daytime strategic bombing missions over the European front, often with the support of long-range fighter escorts. The "F" variant marked a significant advancement over earlier models.
