By exploiting the engine's power combined with the solid structural reliability of the chassis and suspension, even over long distances, many units were built for the recovery of broken-down or accident-damaged heavy vehicles. The equipment consisted of a rear-mounted crane capable of lifting the vehicles to be recovered, as well as numerous additional compartments to store equipment and tools useful for repairs or towing operations. The efficient gearbox of the MB 2238 and the correct weight distribution ensured a good level of safety even when towing the heaviest vehicles at full load.
