Art Scale - 200-D48081 - 1:48 | Republic F-84F Thunderstreak part 1 - Belgian Air Force. The decal sheet contains the following markings: F-84F Thunderstreak - Belgian Air Force, Operational Conversion Unit, 1970. F-84F Thunderstreak - Belgian Air Force, 2nd Squadron, Florennes. F-84F Thunderstreak - Belgian Air Force, 2.Wing Florennes Demo Flight. The Belgian Air Force operated the F-84F Thunderstreak from 1955 to 1972. Belgium received a total of 197 of these fighter-bombers under the MDAP military assistance program. The aircraft served with several squadrons at various bases, with the 2nd Squadron and the 2nd Wing at Florennes playing a significant role. F-84F Thunderstreak - Belgian Air Force, Operational Conversion Unit, 1970: In 1970, as the F-84F was nearing the end of its service life in the Belgian Air Force (replaced by the more modern Mirage 5), the Operational Conversion Unit was used to retrain pilots to other aircraft types. The use of the Thunderstreak in this unit in 1970 marked the final phase of its service, when it was used to train pilots who would no longer fly it actively. F-84F Thunderstreak - Belgian Air Force, 2nd Squadron, Florennes: The 2nd Squadron was one of the main units of the Belgian Air Force to operate the F-84F Thunderstreak from its introduction in 1955 until its retirement in 1972, when it was re-equipped with Mirage 5 aircraft. The 2nd Squadron, based at Florennes, was known for its emblem, the red comet. The squadron's aircraft bore a distinctive marking and took part in many exercises and performed the role of fighter-bomber. The F-84F Thunderstreak - Belgian Air Force, 2nd Wing Florennes Demo Flight: the 2nd Wing at Florennes also operated an aerobatic group (Demo Flight) that performed flight demonstrations in F-84F Thunderstreak aircraft. These demonstrations were used to promote the Air Force and demonstrate the capabilities of the aircraft and pilots. The aircraft for these demonstrations often carried special, attractive camouflage and were flown by selected, experienced pilots. The Belgian F-84F Thunderstreak played a significant role in the Air Force during the early Cold War. Many were scrapped after retirement, but some have survived as museum exhibits or memorials. The F-84F Thunderstreak was an American arrow-wing jet fighter bomber developed by Republic Aviation. Its development was a continuation of the earlier F-84 Thunderjet straight-wing type, but the "F" version represented an almost entirely new aircraft. The prototype F-84F first flew in June 1950. Series production began in 1954, and the aircraft served primarily with the U.S. Air Force's Tactical Air Command as a fighter-bomber for ground attack. A total of 2,711 F-84Fs were produced, more than half of which were delivered to NATO member nations under the Mutual Defense Assistance Program (MDAP). The F-84F Thunderstreak featured an arrow wing, which allowed it to reach higher speeds than its straight-wing predecessor. It was powered by a Wright J65 jet engine. The aircraft carried an armament of six 12.7 mm machine guns and could carry up to 2,700 kg of external cargo, including bombs and rockets, and even a tactical nuclear weapon. Although the F-84F was more advanced than the original Thunderjet, its service with the U.S. Air Force's front line was relatively short, as jet technology advanced rapidly and it was soon replaced by more modern machines such as the F-100 Super Sabre. However, the F-84F remained in service with the Air National Guard until the 1970s, and served even longer in many allied countries, such as Turkey until 1982. The F-84F Thunderstreak saw combat deployment in the French Air Force during the Suez Crisis and the Greek-Turkish conflict over Cyprus, for example. Some modified machines were also used for special purposes, for example in the FICON project. If necessary, the decal can be removed - washed off with Zippo lighter fluid. Art Scale - 200-D48082 - 1:48 | Republic F-84F Thunderstreak part 2 - Armee de l?Air / Belgian Air Force. The decal sheet contains the following markings: F-84F Thunderstreak - Armee de l'Air, EC 2/4 Lafayette, 1959. F-84F Thunderstreak - Armee de l'Air, EC 1/1 Corse, 1956. F-84F Thunderstreak - Belgian Air Force, 2.Wing Florennes Demo Flight. F-84F Thunderstreak - Armee de l'Air, EC 2/4 Lafayette, 1959: This machine belonged to Escadron de Chasse 2/4 "La Fayette" (Fighter Squadron 2/4 Lafayette) of the French Air Force (Armee de l'Air). This squadron is historically significant and bears the name of the famous Lafayette Escadrille of World War I, composed of American volunteers. In 1959, the squadron operated F-84F Thunderstreak aircraft, which formed the backbone of the French fighter-bomber force at the time. EC 2/4 Lafayette was part of the 4e Escadre de Chasse (4th Fighter Wing). F-84F Thunderstreak - Armee de l'Air, EC 1/1 Corse, 1956: this Thunderstreak served with the Escadron de Chasse 1/1 Corse (Fighter Squadron 1/1 Corsica) of the French Air Force. This squadron was part of the 1re Escadre de Chasse (1st Fighter Wing). In 1956, when this machine operated, the French Air Force was undergoing rearmament to more modern jet aircraft and the F-84F represented a significant strike force. The EC 1/1 Corse had a rich history dating back to the First World War. F-84F Thunderstreak - Belgian Air Force, 2nd Wing Florennes Demo Flight: This F-84F Thunderstreak belonged to the 2nd Wing of the Belgian Air Force, operating out of Florennes. It served in the Demo Flight of this wing. Demonstration squadrons were tasked with demonstrating the capabilities of aircraft and pilots at air shows and public performances. The Belgian Air Force used the F-84F Thunderstreak from 1955 to 1972, and the 2nd Wing was one of the main units operating these aircraft. The squadron's demonstration aircraft often carried special attractive livery. The F-84F Thunderstreak was an American arrow-wing jet fighter bomber developed by Republic Aviation. Duke Hawkins - HMHDH-039 - No Scale | Republic F-84F Thunderstreak an 84 page book on the Republic F-84F Thunderstreak. With almost 3,500 built, the Thunderstreak was the first fighter-bomber to be equipped with swept wings and saw action with 12 countries around the world. Contrary to many of its contemporaries, the F-84F remained in service for a long time; with the first ones becoming operational in 1954, the last were taken out of service in the 1980s. This book shows every detail of the jet, from the air intake, to the fuselage, wings, speed brakes and landing gear. Of course, the cockpit is also shown in detail and colour action photos are included. Thunderstreaks of Belgium, USA, The Netherlands, Greece, France, Italy, Germany, ... are included. Naval Fighters - NFAF219 - No Scale | Republic XF-84H Thunderscreech. The XF-84H was derived from the RF-84F as a supersonic propeller test vehicle driven by an afterburning Allison XT-40 turboprop engine. Two aircraft were built and briefly tested as noise produced by the propeller even at idle was too severe for safe ground crew activities. The sickening noise gave the aircraft its nickname "Thunderscreech". It was the 1st U.S. aircraft built with a Ram Air Turbine (RAT) which provided emergency electrical and hydraulic power in subsequent U.S. aircraft, but provided needed power for the XF-84H when landing. Another novel feature was a "take-off fin" or "vortex gate" aft of the cockpit to overcome the effects of the propeller torque. The flight program lasted from June 1955 until October 1956 with the program being taken over by the McDonnell XF-88B which flew until January 1958. The XF-88B had both turbojet and turboprop engines and could taxi and take off without the turboprop operating, thus without subjecting the ground crew to the painful noise. 40-pages, 77 b&w and 4 color photos, 21 drawings More | Aircraft books | Catalogue | £12.40

Warpaint Series - WPS100 - No Scale | Republic F-84F Thunderstreak and RF-84F Thunderflash. Fraught with engine and aerodynamic teething problems that resulted in its missing the Korean War for which it was intended, the F-84F Thunderstreak, initially seen as languishing in the shadow of the more well-known and proven F-86 Sabre, matured to become a formidable fighter-bomber that served not only with the USAF's Tactical and Strategic Air Commands, but also with numerous European air forces for many of which it also offered the first experience in swept wing jet fighter operation. It provided a much-needed deterrent during the critical early years of the Cold War and the 1960s, especially with NATO air forces, where it normally replaced its straight-wing predecessor, the F-84 Thunderjet. No fewer than 2,711 examples of the Thunderstreak were built, so that for a time it was the fighter most in widespread use in Europe, becoming the backbone of the Alliance's combat element. In contrast, its service with the USAF was rather short-lived when newer fighters such as the F-100 Super Sabre and F-4 Phantom with superior and supersonic performance supplanted it in service. However, with the outbreak of the Vietnam War, when these modern fighters and the USAF's other more valuable combat aircraft were deployed to Southeast Asia, the USAF recalled the Thunderstreak for another spell of frontline service in defence of mainland United States. It was only the French who used it in anger when it carried out strikes on Egyptian targets during the Suez Crisis of 1956. Sharing the Thunderstreak's main characteristics including its vices and virtues, its offshoot, the RF-84F Thunderflash, was considered to be the best photo-reconnaissance fighter of its time, capable of carrying six cameras in its abundant nose in 15 different combinations. The Thunderflash, too, was exported to most of NATO's air forces, as well as to the Republic of China Air Force where it carried out routine overflights over mainland Communist China in a hostile environment. The French, too, used it in a firing war, again in Suez, while the Turkish Air Force similarly employed it during its brief war with Greece in 1974. Again, the advent of such types as the RF-101 recce Voodoo and the RF-4C Phantom replaced it in USAF service, while the F-104 was the type that most replaced it in NATO air arms. But both the Thunderstreak and Thunderflash remained in service for a long period in some of the European air forces, the last Thunderflash being retired from the Greek Air Force in 1991. This latest Warpaint title gives an account of these two types' service, with detailed lists of serials, squadron service, production and variants in 80 pages of text accompanied by no fewer than 190 colour and B&W photos, eight pages of colour artwork by and foldout scale drawings, describing the development and operational career of these remarkable aircraft. This book is written by Charles Stafrace and is superbly illustrated by Richard J.Caruana. More | Aircraft books | Catalogue | £20.00
