Nieuport 16 The Nieuport 16 represented the next step in the development of the highly successful Nieuport 11, appearing on the Western Front in early 1916. Retaining the compact and agile sesquiplane layout of its predecessor, the Nieuport 16 featured a strengthened airframe and a more powerful engine installation.
Powered by the 110-horsepower Le Rh'ne 9J rotary engine, the Nieuport 16 could reach speeds of approximately 165 km/h. The increased power gave the aircraft improved performance, while its distinctive V-strut sesquiplane configuration retained the excellent manoeuvrability for which the early Nieuport fighters became famous.
Externally, the Nieuport 16 could be distinguished from the Nieuport 11 by several details, including the revised engine cowling and the characteristic pilot's headrest. Usually armed with a Lewis machine gun mounted above the upper wing, the type saw service with French and Allied aviation units during 1916.
Although its frontline career was relatively brief, the Nieuport 16 formed an important link between the Nieuport 11 and the later Nieuport 17 and represents a significant stage in the rapid development of Allied fighter aircraft during the First World War.
