Fighters over the Adriatic (with English translation)
Fighter Aircraft of the Austro-Hungarian Navy in Photographs
The subject of Austro-Hungarian naval fighter aircraft has not yet been covered independently in any specialised book. This new publication presents the first comprehensive overview of the development and operational use of the fighter aircraft (referred to at the time as defensive aircraft) of the Austro-Hungarian Naval Air Service.
The publication is written in Czech, but almost the entire text is also available in English (there is German and Italian translation produced but we will not be stocking it) in the form of an inserted booklet of smaller format.
The introductory chapter clearly explains the origins, development, and operational use of these aircraft. The main part of the publication consists of an extensive photo album covering all aircraft types used in this role, accompanied by detailed captions. The large reproduction format allows details to stand out that often remain unnoticed in ordinary publications. Some photographs are reproduced across two pages, while others are supplemented with enlarged details.
The photographs originate from private collections across several countries and are reproduced in the highest possible quality. Most of the aircraft shown are also accompanied by a colour side-view illustration depicting the typical colour scheme of the aircraft.
The book also contains extensive tables listing all Austro-Hungarian naval fighter aircraft, summaries of aircraft losses, and" for the first time ever published" a complete list of victories achieved by Austro-Hungarian naval aviators.
An unusual bonus consists of inserted colour samples of two camouflage paint shades used on the aircraft.
As this is a small-print-run publication, the printing costs alone are approximately twice as high as the retail price of some publications and magazines of similar length. For this reason, the final selling price is unfortunately higher, despite a considerable amount of unpaid work involved in its preparation.
The publication further includes a brief biography of the most successful naval aviator, Gottfried Banfield, as well as a final chapter devoted to defensive aircraft pilots who were of Czech nationality or are sometimes incorrectly counted among Czech pilots, together with aviators who were not of Czech origin but later served in the Czechoslovak military air force. These two sections are not translated.
